"The B.C. Multiculturalism and Anti-Racism Awards were held on March 21, 2023, in Vancouver to honour the people and organizations that are addressing racism and promoting inclusivity in their communities. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2023 ceremony is the first in-person event since 2019."
" Aria Law is a 15-year-old student from Burnaby who won the Emerging Leader Award for her work to address hate targeted at racialized seniors in her neighbourhood. By selling bao buns with anti-racism messages through social media, she was able to help local seniors and young people find a common ground. As part of her award, Law will receive a $5,000 grant for the charity of her choice, the Canada Caring Community Alliance, which is a non-profit organization that works with racialized seniors in Burnaby."
"I am so grateful and humbled to be part of the awards ceremony and among other leaders in the anti-racism space. Racism hurts and we can call it out together," said Law. "I hope that my experience encourages more youth to show kindness, patience and love to Asian seniors who have been harmed."

Jiaozi Participation at 2023 BC Dumpling Festival in Coquitlam
It is important to remember that Asian seniors who immigrated decades ago have lived through monumental changes in the social perception of their personhood. They lived through legislated racism in BC. Their families have been systemically discriminated against and their now senior children are seeing an resurgence of racist violence. The effects of these criminal acts continue and perpetuate in our justice system with little or no support for victims. All of these individuals have been the target of systemic prejudice due to their race because the racism was legislated and still exists today. As Asian seniors diversify, they are a demographic that has historically placed them in the way of prejudice and abuse.
With summer revival in full swing in British Columbia [when this was first put on the web] - Asian seniors who are attacked violently may not have resources to deal with the hate. It may also be the case that there are Asian seniors who will be limited in their ability to participate in activities due to injuries, finance, illness, or mobility issues.
Our goal is to help the victims of the racial violence. Our hope is to bring love and hope to the victims of brutal racial events. Jiaozi.com, sponsored by Golden On On Wonton House has dedicated the proceeds of sales of buns to assist many victims of the attack on April 11, 2021.
All of these individuals have been the target of systemic prejudice due to their race because the racism was legislated and still exists today. As Asian seniors diversify, they are a demographic that has historically placed them in the way of prejudice and abuse.
Being able to address their concerns in an open manner is paramount to providing quality care services and support inside and outside the home.
